Driving the Retail Experience

As one of the North’s busiest shopping centres, Manchester Arndale has undergone several waves of refurbishment and redevelopment to enhance its retail and leisure offer. The interiors are now defined by brighter lighting, upgraded materials, and a sense of vibrancy that has made the centre increasingly attractive to both brands and customers. However, the arrival experience by car remained stubbornly stuck in the past—via a dated 1960s multi-storey car park that felt disconnected from the upgraded customer journey inside. The contrast between the polished interior and the raw concrete thresholds created an opportunity to extend the quality of the experience from the moment of arrival.

This concept sought to bridge that gap. Bold supergraphics, high-impact wayfinding, and a vibrant colour strategy combined to improve legibility and orientation across all levels. The use of playful lighting elements, landmark signage, and spatial zoning helped transform a utilitarian environment into a space that was both intuitive and engaging. Functional upgrades also supported the broader shift toward sustainable mobility. Designated pedestrian areas, secure cycle storage, and electric vehicle charging points were introduced to encourage a healthier, more flexible mix of transport options—future-proofing the asset while aligning with wider city and climate goals.

By visually and experientially connecting the car park with the retail environment, the scheme ensured that the arrival sequence was no longer a forgotten afterthought but an integral part of the Arndale’s offer. A place that previously felt disconnected now contributes positively to the overall identity of the centre, supporting footfall, customer satisfaction, and the needs of a modern city.
