The Making of a Designer
Forty key moments from forty years in practice

To mark forty years in interior design, Design Insider invited Jasper Sanders to reflect on the moments, people, places and experiences that have shaped his career.

The Making of a Designer, Forty Key Moments from Forty Years in Practice is a three-part editorial series that traces Sanders’ journey from a seven-year-old fascinated by a building site to the founder of Manchester-based Jasper Sanders + Partners. Rather than presenting a conventional career retrospective, the series uses forty defining moments to explore how a designer’s thinking develops through experience, curiosity, failure, collaboration and continual change.

Part One, Finding My Feet, 1977 | 1997

The first chapter follows the formative years, from that early encounter with construction through education, first employment and the transition from drawing boards to digital design. Along the way, encounters with architecture, art, technology and influential designers begin to establish a philosophy centred on observation, experience and the idea that good design is about far more than appearance.

Part Two, Learning My Trade, 1998 | 2013

The second chapter moves into professional maturity, from multidisciplinary practice at BDP to establishing its Manchester interior design team and working on increasingly complex projects. It explores the relationship between interior design, architecture and engineering, and the growing understanding that successful design is not simply about generating ideas, but solving problems and delivering them. The chapter culminates in the decision to establish Jasper Sanders + Partners in 2013.

Part Three, Finding My Voice, 2013 | Present

The final chapter charts the development of an independent design practice and a more personal design philosophy. It considers originality, collaboration, sustainability, the changing workplace, technology and artificial intelligence, alongside the importance of people and long-term relationships. From designing a home and moving into a new studio to becoming a Design Insider Ambassador and planting sycamore trees grown from a mother tree, the final moments reflect a designer increasingly concerned with legacy, responsibility and what design can contribute beyond the spaces themselves.

Across all three chapters, one idea provides the connecting thread, curiosity. The series is ultimately less about four decades of projects than four decades of learning, demonstrating how a career in design is shaped by the people encountered, the mistakes made, the questions asked and the willingness to keep looking at the world differently.
