Exclusive Student Living

Following the success of 16–18 Potterrow, Curlew Capital commissioned a new purpose-built student accommodation at 22A Potterrow, designed by Yeoman McAllister Architects. This sister development, comprising 53 studio apartments, was tailored to mature students and couples, offering a more exclusive living experience within Edinburgh’s vibrant university quarter.

With a variety of studio layouts, the design challenge was to balance furniture efficiency with a premium offering. A concise range of high-specification components was developed for use across all studios, ensuring streamlined manufacture while delivering a hotel-quality experience. Clever integration of storage, such as drawers and shelving within dining tables and desktops, maximised space and functionality throughout each apartment.

The ground floor amenity spaces also posed a spatial challenge, requiring the careful configuration of the management suite, reception, post room, lounge, study room, coffee bar, and laundry within a compact footprint. Despite these constraints, the layout was thoughtfully designed to provide efficient service alongside comfortable zones for relaxation, socialising, and study.

Building on the sophisticated approach established at 16–18 Potterrow, the visual identity for 22A drew inspiration from theatre and drama, creating a confident, refined aesthetic. This was expressed through bold wayfinding and striking signage interventions, enhancing the interior experience throughout the building.
