A Lab for Leading Minds

EMQN is a globally respected authority in molecular diagnostics and a leader in human molecular pathology and genomic testing. Located on a single floorplate within Building ICE at Exchange Quay, their new fit-out was designed to support a team of over 30 staff. The space includes two private offices, a meeting room, and a generous boardroom. Merging the clinical precision of laboratory environments with a softer, more grounded office aesthetic, the design promotes everyday collaboration while reflecting EMQN’s scientific excellence.

To support a culture of collaboration and client engagement, a central core was created – featuring a coffee point and a collaborative lounge that flows through to a private meeting booth and the boardroom beyond. These spaces were designed to foster a sense of community and were intentionally ‘de-tuned’ to contrast with the clinical intensity of the laboratory areas. Warm timbers and rounded forms were used to create a reassuring, approachable atmosphere, subtly referencing the brand language and its connection to DNA strands.

In contrast, the laboratories were designed with practicality and hygiene at their core. Featuring wipeable surfaces, automated systems, and a layout optimised for efficient, process-led workflows, the space supports stringent infection control measures and upholds the highest standards of performance.

The brand’s cool, blue-based colour palette was subtly interpreted throughout the workspace areas, balanced with natural materials and warm peach tones. The double helix – a key symbol of EMQN’s identity—inspired the use of rounded geometries across the design, softening edges and introducing an organic sense of rhythm. The result is a carefully considered environment that reflects the scientific precision of EMQN’s work, while supporting comfort, collaboration, and connection in everyday use.
