Building Stronger Connections

Dunaskin Mill is a campus style student accommodation development on the banks of the River Kelvin, formally the site of one of Glasgow’s largest flour mills which was operational since the 1840’s.

Spread across four new purpose-built accommodation blocks, the amenity spaces are clustered to the outer edges of an interconnecting pedestrian street, creating a vibrant culture of ‘see and be seen’ and in doing so helping to encourage opportune moments and chance encounters for students to meet and form social connections. A broad mix of multi-functional activity spaces has been provided including a gym, social lounges, a TV snug and a dedicated study workspace.

“Ensuring Dunaskin Mill became a desirable destination for students was essential and we were very aware the communal areas at the development would be key to this. JS+P understood how to help shape our offer and the result is a product that is now highly sought after within the city.”

Kirpal Rehinsi | Head of Commercial Services, Fresh Student Living

In forming the visual identity for the development, we drew inspiration from the heritage of the site. Flour shakers and loaves of bread inspired the brand marks, whilst super-sized sieve patterns helped inform the geometries of large timber ceiling rafts spanning the main amenity space.

The blend of architectural zoning and purpose given to each interior space has helped transform what was once a bustling place of industry and commerce into a thriving student community, securing Dunaskin Mill’s place as a highly desirable place to live and study in the city of Glasgow.
