Bringing ‘Razzle Dazzle’ to Life

At Byrom Point, we wanted to create an energetic living experience that encouraged social interaction and responded to the needs of residents. Doing this successfully was crucial to the long term investment strategy for the client and our challenge was to deliver a design a solution that was not only practical, but attractive and engaging enough to drive student lettings in a competitive central Liverpool location.

Focussing on the ground floor communal functions, we were tasked with designing the entrance and reception area, management suite, the study and social space, launderette and gym. This diverse range of functionality and scope meant it was essential that the different areas flowed and connected into each other, both physically and visually; as well as having a striking identity.

Creating a dynamic and inclusive living experience that encourages social interaction and responds to the demands of today’s discerning students.

“We love the work JS+P have done at Byrom Point. More importantly, our customers love it too, something that helps make the lettings process far easier for us.”

We looked to Liverpool’s maritime heritage to help inspire the design response, with the highly engaging and expressive camouflage painting technique known as ‘razzle dazzle’, which was applied to warships during the First World War, as a graphic device to inform the visual identity. This helped us to create a dynamic and vibrant ground floor space that unites each of the activity zones within a bright and playful design scheme that reflects the city’s passion, cultural character and warm welcome.

The result is a best in class student living development that delivers a high quality addition to the Liverpool student accommodation market and ultimately provides the client team and operator with a commercially competitive product to differentiate their offering in a local and regional context.
