Bringing ‘Razzle Dazzle’ to Life

Byrom Point set out to establish a bold and energetic identity within Liverpool’s highly competitive student accommodation market. Located in the heart of the city, this purpose-built development needed to offer more than just functional amenities, it required a compelling, characterful environment that would resonate with students, foster a sense of community, and support long-term occupancy for both the client and operator.

The design strategy focused on creating social, welcoming spaces that encourage interaction and enhance the student experience, ensuring Byrom Point stands out as a destination of choice in a crowded sector.

Design attention on the ground floor centered around a series of key spaces, including the entrance and arrival experience, management suite, residents’ lounge, study zones, launderette, and gym.

The brief called for a diverse mix of settings that were functionally distinct yet visually and physically interconnected. The aim was to encourage fluid movement, natural interaction, and a strong sense of belonging from the moment residents stepped through the door.

Inspiration was drawn from Liverpool’s maritime past—specifically the bold and experimental camouflage known as “razzle dazzle”, applied to ships during the First World War to disrupt enemy targeting. Originally conceived by artists and designers, these geometric patterns have become symbolic of the city’s spirit of creativity and resilience.

This graphic language was reinterpreted within the interior, forming the backbone of a scheme that is at once youthful, intelligent, and unmistakably Liverpudlian. Patterns, colours, and spatial cues subtly echo the layered energy of “razzle dazzle,” creating a playful yet sophisticated identity that ties the various communal spaces together under a unified narrative.

The resulting environment elevates the building beyond utility. It offers students a vibrant, characterful setting to live, study, and socialise—and provides the operator with a unique and commercially distinctive asset rooted in place, heritage, and imagination.
