Insights from [D]arc Sessions Italy

Jasper Sanders + Partners values light as one of the defining ingredients of good design to shaping atmosphere, enhance wellbeing and transform the way spaces are experienced. This belief in the transformative power of light led to Jasper being invited to attend [D]arc Sessions Italy in Sicily in May 2026, joining an international gathering of designers, manufacturers and creative leaders shaping the future of architectural lighting.

Across two inspiring days, set against the backdrop of the Sicilian coastline, some of the world’s leading voices in lighting design came together to exchange ideas, explore emerging technologies and discuss the emotional and technical possibilities of light through a programme of presentations, workshops and one-to-one conversations. Whilst the event showcased some of the industry’s latest innovations, the greatest value lay in bringing together a community united by a shared belief that thoughtfully designed lighting has the power to transform not only buildings, but the way people experience them.

Five examples particularly demonstrated the breadth of thinking and innovation:

    • Luceplan introduced the beautifully understated Flia portable floor lamp. Lightweight, rechargeable and suitable for both interior and exterior environments, its elegant simplicity allows it to almost disappear within a space while producing an exceptionally soft, atmospheric quality of light. It is a product defined by restraint rather than spectacle.
    • ERCO once again demonstrated why it remains one of the world’s benchmark manufacturers of architectural lighting. Its meticulously engineered modular systems reflect extraordinary precision, while the miniature Axis spotlight delivers remarkable performance from an incredibly compact fitting. These are luminaires designed for projects where lighting quality is paramount.
    • Vibia continues to challenge conventional lighting design by placing human experience at the centre of product development. Their innovative woven tension straps, incorporating integrated cabling, allow fittings to span large distances with remarkable elegance and lightness. The result is a collection that balances engineering excellence with genuine emotional warmth.
    • Amongst the outdoor lighting presentations, Landa’s Nest luminaire offered a particularly poetic solution for illuminating trees and landscapes. Sensitive, discreet and beautifully resolved, it demonstrates how exterior lighting can enrich architecture without ever becoming visually dominant.
    • Finally, Fagerhult presented one of the event’s most compelling sustainability stories. Luminaires manufactured using cardboard and hemp demonstrated that low-carbon design need not compromise engineering quality or aesthetic refinement. Rather than sustainability as marketing, these products reflected genuine innovation driven by environmental responsibility.

The studio extends its thanks to the team at [D]arc Sessions for their generous hospitality and for curating an event that continues to set the benchmark for dialogue, collaboration and innovation within the global lighting community.
